| Buccaneer arrived at the sanctuary when he was 2
1/2 weeks old. His mum (a thoroughbred) had terrible laminitis, and despite every effort made by her owner had to be put to sleep.
When Buccaneer arrived we put him in a stable where he could see two of our other
residents: Gypsy, our oldest Shetland and Humphrey, one of our donkeys. This really cheered him up as he had had a pretty traumatic day. We then spent the rest of the day and night trying to get him to suckle from a
bottle - he was not keen! The next day we compromised on milk out of a bucket.
Buccaneer has had to grow up very fast. Fortunately, this has been made much easier for him by his adopted
'Mum' Humphrey!
Humphrey is a gelded chocolate donkey who has been with
Willows Animal Sanctuary for 3 years. The pair bonded much to everyone's surprise and are now inseparable.
At Willows Buccaneer is assured of a safe home for the rest of his life. |
